Sourdough Starter Next-Day Delivery

Order a sourdough starter before 2pm on a working day and it leaves our kitchen in Bristol that afternoon, arrives the next working day, and is awake and ready to use about two hours after you open the box. In short: order today, bake tomorrow.

Two clocks have to be beaten to get there, and most sellers only beat one. The first is the post. The second, much the bigger one, is the wait for the culture to become usable — five to seven days of daily feeding if what lands on your doormat is a dried packet. Ours ships live and held dormant, so that second clock runs in hours.

The short answer

Free next-day delivery on every UK order, with no minimum spend. Order by 2pm, Monday to Friday. Your starter wakes in about two hours; your first loaf is a same-day or overnight bake.

Can I get a sourdough starter delivered tomorrow?

Yes, anywhere in the UK. Orders placed before 2pm, Monday to Friday are packed and posted the same day and arrive the next working day. There is no express tier to upgrade to and no basket threshold to clear — next working day is simply the standard UK service, and it is free on every order.

Everything is packed by hand in Bristol. Nothing is drop-shipped and nothing waits in a third-party warehouse to be picked — the usual reason a next-day order quietly becomes a three-day one.

Is there a minimum spend for free next-day delivery?

No, and this is where we differ most from the rest of the UK market. A single £9.99 starter ships free and next day, exactly as a £40 order would.

Several UK sourdough sellers put a threshold on free delivery — £50 is a common one — so a single starter arrives with postage bolted on top. An £8.99 starter with £3.95 postage is really a £12.94 starter. Read the total at checkout, not the number on the listing.

What happens if I order after 2pm, or at the weekend?

It goes out on the next working day and arrives the working day after that. An order placed at 4pm on Friday is posted on Monday and lands on Tuesday. We would rather say so than advertise a Saturday delivery we do not actually run.

Bank holidays shift things the same way. If your bake is tied to a particular date, give yourself a working day of slack.

Can I get same-day sourdough starter delivery?

Not by post, and we would be sceptical of anyone offering it for a mail-order culture. What we do instead is compress the part that normally takes a week. With a dried culture the clock starts when the packet arrives and runs another five to seven days of feeding; with ours it runs about two hours. Next-day delivery plus a two-hour wake-up is, as far as we know, the shortest road from placing an order to putting a loaf in the oven.

How soon can I actually bake?

Here is the honest timeline.

  1. Day one, before 2pm — you order. The parcel leaves Bristol that afternoon.
  2. Day two — it arrives. You add flour and water. About two hours later the culture is active and bubbling and can go straight into a recipe.
  3. Day two or three — you bake. Mix the dough, bulk ferment, shape, prove, bake. Depending on the recipe and how warm your kitchen is, that is either a long day or an overnight prove followed by a morning bake.

So: bread out of the oven roughly 24 to 36 hours after the parcel lands. With a dried culture the same loaf is a week to ten days away, because the first five to seven of those days go on feeding something not yet strong enough to lift a dough.

What does “ready in about 2 hours” actually mean?

It means the starter is ready. It does not mean the bread is, and we would rather be blunt about that here than explain it in an email afterwards.

Two hours after its first feed the culture is awake, visibly active and usable in a recipe. What it is not is a finished loaf. Sourdough still needs its bulk ferment, shaping, prove and bake, and a livelier starter shortens none of those. Expect most of a day, or a night in the fridge, between mixing and slicing.

What the two hours buys you is the deletion of the week of feeding at the front end — not the deletion of fermentation itself. Nothing can do that. The full method, from first feed to cooling rack, is written out in your first sourdough loaf, start to finish.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Yes — to 26 countries in the European Union and 13 further countries worldwide. Next working day is a UK service only; everywhere else runs to the windows below. These are the windows our carriers will actually commit to, set deliberately wide. Most parcels arrive well inside them.

The 13 international destinations are Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

Two things to flag plainly. We do not currently ship to France — if that is you, no rate will appear at checkout. And customs can add days to any international parcel, which is why the far edge of those windows looks so generous. Full terms are on our shipping policy page.

Will the culture survive the post?

Yes. The starter is shelf-stable and travels at room temperature — no cold chain, no refrigeration, no special handling at your end. It is caught at its peak and held dormant, which is precisely what makes a few days in a postbag a non-event. A parcel stuck in customs for a fortnight still wakes up when you feed it.

Contains wheat (gluten).

Which starter should I order if I want to bake tomorrow?

Any of them. Every culture we sell ships live and travels on the same free next-day UK service. The live San Francisco sourdough starter at £9.99 is the one most people begin with, in multipacks of two, three or four if you want spares or gifts. To start on a different flour, the rye, wholemeal, white spelt and Italian ‘00’ cultures are £11.99 each; compare them in our full range of live sourdough starters.

You only ever need to buy one: fed properly, a culture lasts indefinitely and converts to a new flour in two or three feeds. The choice matters far less than whether it turns up alive.

FAQ

Do you ship to the United States and Australia?

Yes. Both sit in our international band: £4.99 standard, typically 3 to 17 business days, or £7.99 express, typically 2 to 11 business days. Customs clearance can add time beyond our control.

Do the multipacks ship free as well?

Yes. Free next working day delivery applies to every UK order whatever its size, so the multipacks ship on exactly the same terms as a single starter.

What if my order does not arrive when it should have?

Email hello@doughdoughathome.com and we will chase the parcel or send a replacement. That does not affect your statutory rights.
